2017 Monthly Goals: June

17goals

I cannot believe how much I accomplished in May, y’all! I think it helped a lot that we hosted the annual Memorial Day picnic at our house on Saturday so I had to get my to do list finished! I work best with deadlines. I just don’t like them. Ha!

May Goals:

1. Finish the front yard landscaping. ALMOST DONE. We have everything done except planting new bushes. We pulled out all the old half-dead bushes and plants. We laid new pine straw. I touched up all the paint on the front of the porch and I have new potted plants out there. It looks amazing. I’m still debating what bushes and plants to do in the front and I’ll probably wait until Fall since it’s already in the mid-90’s here. I’m happy with our progress!

2. Purge my closet. DONE. Holy cow. I gave 5 trash bags of clothes to my sister and sent 3 to Goodwill. I pulled everything out of my closet, reconfigured the whole layout and then organized it. I feel so much better. I only kept things that I really love and will wear. And I found things that I forgot I even bought because they were buried under the clutter.

3. Finish master bedroom redo. DONE. Well as done as it’s going to be for now. I still need to finish the area around our desk but I’m still not sure what I want to do there. I’ll finish it once I decide.

4. Finish all half done projects. DONE. I touched up all the paint on the first floor and all the paint up the stairway and in the hallway and landing of the second floor. I finished painting a small cabinet to go in the upstairs hallway. I gel stained the bar, bench, and table on the back deck. I touched up the gel stain on the kitchen cabinets, island, and the stairway rails and banisters.

5. Do another big purge of the house. DONE. We took another huge load of stuff to Goodwill and I cleaned out the kids closets again. I think I’ve finally gotten the house to the point where every single nook and cranny is organized and purposeful. Every item has a home. It’s a huge relief!

June Goals:

1. Clear off the DVR & Watch less TV. This is a big one for me. I’ve cut out nearly all the reality shows that are really so dumb that I’m embarrassed to admit I was still watching them. Ha! I mainly watch house shows at this point. I’m a sucker for House Hunters and all those type shows. Matt and I do enjoy a few shows together but for the most part I want to spend less time watching TV and more time outside this summer.

2. Make my bed every day. I’ve been doing this for about a week now and it’s made such a difference in how I feel when I go upstairs during the day. I love walking into my bedroom and it feels clean and put together. So I want to make this a habit.

3. Complete 3 house projects. I want to paint the kids bathroom, build a barn door gate to replace the baby gate that keeps the dogs from running out of the house when the kids open the front door, and install a key pad door handle on the front door.

4. Keep the house clean. I scrubbed and cleaned for the entire last week to get ready for our Memorial Day picnic. The house is spotless. You could eat off my floors and bathe in my toilets. Now I need to keep it this way to avoid being so stressed out. I’m going to create a schedule to help me. I used to have a cleaning schedule and I slacked off. Now is the time to get back to it.

5. Plan easy summer dinners. We’ve made a commitment to not eat out this summer with the exception of the occasional pizza night. And it’s so hot here that I don’t want to be using the oven every night. So I need to hit Pinterest and make a menu of delicious dinners to try- pasta salads, grilled meats, sliders….I’m excited to try some new things.

5 Things Friday {5.19.17}

We are winding down the school year, y’all. Tyler has 2 exams today and 1 on Monday and he is DONE with his sophomore year. Praise Jesus! The other kids still have a couple more weeks to go. But we’re almost there. It was a productive week in our house. I got a lot of projects finished and knocked a bunch of stuff off my to do list!

1. I finally finished the pantry. If you follow me on Instagram then you saw the saga with ANTS in the pantry. Gross. So I pulled every single thing out, scrubbed and sanitized it, and bought new air tight containers. It was a job. A long, ugly, job. But it is much more functional now.

2. On Mother’s Day, Matt power washed the back deck and the wooden furniture that my dad built so I could start staining the furniture. My dad built this amazing bar from scrap wood he had in his shop. It’s awesome and I cannot wait to put it to good use this summer. I have grand plans for this back deck to make it more functional and they are already under way. I can’t wait to share the transformation with you.

3. Our neighborhood pool opened on Sunday and the kids were so happy. That water was FRIGID! They jumped right in and had a great time. I sat on a patio chair and read a book. Everyone was happy. I can’t wait to spend long summer days at the pool with friends. It’s going to rock.

4. Matt and I had some errands to run earlier in the week and the girls didn’t want to come but Mason did. He tagged along and had a great time. It’s so nice being able to take kids one at a time and spend some time with them. We got ice cream and had so much fun with him. He has the best sense of humor.

5. Matt put together the first of several patio sets that I’ve ordered. We were supposed to go to Tyler’s end of the year athletic banquet but he had to study for 3 exams the next morning so he opted not to attend. He studied for hours and hours. It’s nice to see him actually taking school seriously for once. Ha! So Matt got to spend the evening putting together my new patio dining set. I love it. I found it on clearance on Target.com for a steal. It’s the perfect size for what I needed. The kids love it! They’ve eaten breakfast and dinner out there every day since we set it up.

We are winding down on this school year, y’all. And we are literally limping across the finish line again this year. I am so ready for long lazy days at the pool with a margarita in hand. So ready. I will never understand why schools pack in 6 months worth of stuff into the last month of the school year. Why? Why do they do this to us? It’s been a busy week around here but we got a lot of stuff done!

1. I mostly finished my master bedroom redo. Finally. I got the new curtains hung that I picked up for a steal at IKEA in the as-is bins. I got the new bedding on and hung the pom pom garland I’ve had for months but just never got around to doing. I love how it all turned out. This is generally the most neglected room in the house so it’s been half finished for about a year now. I’m still working on the other side of the room so I’ll share that when I figure out exactly what I want to do.

2. I also finished up a couple of projects I’ve been working on for the last week or so. I, and by that I mean Matt, finished assembling my new TV stand and I decluttered and restyled the decor in the room. I love it! I also finished chalk painting the red cabinet in the upstairs hallway, hung the mirror that’s been sitting on the floor for about a year now, and added some decor. It turned out perfect.

3.  We also worked a lot on the front yard landscaping. Matt cut down all the old bushes in front of the window. I’ve hated those bushes for years and finally convinced Matt that they needed to go. It had to get done quickly because our pine straw was getting delivered the next day. And of course, as it always happens around here, the weather forecast included a 90% chance of rain the day after the pine straw was delivered. So we spent hours that evening spreading it in the beds we created. The kids helped a lot. And then it didn’t rain at all. Of course. Ha! This is my life.

4. In between errands and chores, Matt and I snuck away for an impromptu early dinner at Hwy 55. We had to go to Lowes to pick up some stuff and then planned to return our redbox movies in a little shopping center. The Hwy 55 was right next door. How could we resist? It was nice. We rarely get out on our own to eat anymore so I enjoyed it. The joys of having older kids who can babysit.

5. Maia is quite the artist in our house. She loves to draw and paint and she is passionate about photography. She recently had one of her paintings from school chosen to be displayed in the art show put on by her charter school. She was the only 6th grader who had a piece chosen to be displayed. And she doesn’t even like this piece, she thinks it’s not one of her best.

So that’s a pretty accurate recap of my week. And the weekend will be more decluttering, cleaning, and finishing projects. And grocery shopping- Walmart, Sam’s Club, and Aldi all in one day. Be jealous of my exciting life.

5 Things Friday {5.5.17}

I don’t know what it is about Spring that gives me the purging and decorating bug but it happens every single year. The last week has been full of projects and purging and I’m nowhere near done. Matt is so thrilled with me right now.

1. We started off last weekend with outdoor work. Matt power washed the front of the house, the porch, and the driveway. It looks so much better now. Then he laid the black edging in the yard for our new beds. Pine straw is being delivered on Monday and that will seriously help our curb appeal. Tyler had football practice early on Saturday morning but when he got home he vacuumed out all 3 cars and then washed them. Earning his keep, y’all. Earning his keep.

2. While they were working on the outside, I was working inside. A good friend of mine was getting rid of her nearly brand new king size bed because her fiance is moving into her house and he prefers to keep his bed. Seriously, she’s only had this bed for a few months! It’s a $2500 mattress! And she gave it to us for FREE! I’ve always wanted a king size bed but it was way down the list of stuff to buy. So I’m not going to pass up a free one in brand new condition. Matt rented a small UHaul and he took Tyler to pick it up.

3. And as it always happens, one project turns into a whole list of projects. We ended up switching the kids beds around again…for the second time in less than 2 months. We gave Zoey’s loft bed to our nephew, Jax. We moved Mason’s full size bed into Zoey’s room and Mason got our old queen size bed. Everyone was happy. Except Matt, who technically did 99% of the actual moving. But we got it done. And our whole house is in a state of disarray with stuff everywhere. I started purging in one room and it trickled into another room and so on and so on. Then at around 6:30pm on Sunday night I realized we have NO KING SIZE SHEETS for our new bed. None. So Matt and I made what was supposed to be a quick trip to IKEA for sheets. And we came home with a new TV cabinet, new pillows, new curtains, new sheets, new comforters….you know how that goes.

IMG_0302

4. And lest you think I’ve given away my kids to concentrate on my house, I took Maia back to the eye doctor office to get her glasses tightened. They fit fine at first but then started slipping down her face while she was reading in class. She had the whole librarian glasses at the end of her nose thing going on.

IMG_0301

5. As part of my purging and house re-doing, I moved the red cabinet from our foyer to our upstairs landing in the hallway. It looks much better up there but the red was just too….red. So I used the leftover chalk paint from Maia’s bedroom project and painted it yesterday. It literally took me less than an hour and it made such a difference.

It’s been a busy week. And the weekend will be even busier. We’re working in the yard again tomorrow and I have a gazillion projects to finish inside to. But it feels so good to get some things off my ever growing to do list!

2017 Monthly Goals: May

17goals

Holy cow…it’s MAY! Tyler only has 19 days of school left, the little kids only have 28 days left, and Maia only has 27 days left! We are coming into the home stretch, y’all! April went by in a flash but I still got a lot done.

April Goals:

1. Work on front yard. HALF DONE. We got a good start anyway. Matt pressure washed the front porch, the steps, the front of the house, the garage door, and the entire driveway. We laid our edging down and are waiting for our pine straw to arrive, and we hired a lawn company to fix our grass. Still more to do though.

2. Start planning the backyard redo. DONE. We started planning but haven’t done anything. Well we got the hot tub fixed but that’s it. I have a good idea of what I want to do back there, now we just have to make it happen.

3. Organize papers. DONE. I completely emptied out the big file cabinet and reorganized the files. I filed all the paperwork in the small file box I keep in my command center. And I created a simple weekly file box for the kitchen. Paperwork organized!

4. Do a driving contract with Tyler. DONE. We sat down and went over rules, consequences, expectations, etc. He knows his curfew, he knows what he is expected to do around the house to help pay for his car, he knows what will happen should he not live up to his part of the contract.

5. Clean out master closet. NOPE. Didn’t even get started. Still on the list.

May Goals:

1. Finish the front yard landscaping. The pine straw will be arriving soon. Then I need to touch up the paint on the porch and railings, hang my fern, get some potted plants, pull out the dead bushes, and replace/plant all new bushes and plants. It’s a lot but it will look so amazing when it’s done.

2. Purge my closet. Oh holy cow my closet it awful. I need to get rid of at least 50% of my clothes. Seriously. I think I’m going to do what a friend recommended and purge all but a certain number of items then take those purged items and store them for 6 months. If I don’t miss them or need them in those 6 months then they get donated. I’ll be much happier when I’m not staring at a cluttered mess in my closet.

3. Finish master bedroom redo. We got a king sized bed yesterday and that means I had to completely rework the bedroom. It’s a big disaster right now. So I want to get it completely 100% finished this month.

4. Finish all half done projects. I have several. I need to touch up paint in most of the rooms, finish painting a cabinet, switch rugs in a couple of rooms, and a list of other stuff.

5. Do another big purge of the house. We took a huge truck load to Goodwill this weekend. And I’ve already started another pile. It feels SO GOOD to purge. I will never be a hoarder. Ha!
