5 Things Friday {6.16.17}

The first official week of Summer Break is coming to a close and what a week we’ve had. I love summer. I love it so hard. The kids have slept in until past 10 nearly every single day. My house has been full of laughter and noise. All I smell is sunscreen and chlorine. It’s perfection.

1. Last weekend was super busy at our house. We had some stuff that needed to get done before we got down to the business of enjoying summer. Tyler had football at 8am. Then I had to take him to his sports physical at 11:30. His school participates in the free sports physicals every year and luckily it’s at the same place where Tyler sees the sports medicine doctor so it works out nicely. After his physical we spent hours working in the back yard getting ready for the landscaping to start. Matt and I made a quick trip to Sam’s Club then took the kids to the pool for a couple of hours before making pizzas and watching movies. Maia and Zoey both had friends sleep over and there wasn’t a whole lot of sleeping happening. But it was fun!

2. Tyler helped out his varsity basketball coach with a camp for middle school and JV players this week. The coach asked a few of the varsity players to help out to earn service hours. It worked out nicely because he had football from 8-10 and then the basketball camp was from 10-3. He came home exhausted every day. He told me that they’re like puppies- full of endless energy and always yapping. Ha!

3. The 3 youngest had dentist appointments this week. Cleanings and no cavities all around! Poor Maia goes for her orthodontist consult at the end of the month. Her teeth are pretty crooked and her bite is a little bit off so it’s time to get it fixed. She’s thrilled.

4. My dad came down this week to help us with a project on the back deck. We just replaced the hot tub cover and a storm already knocked a branch into it, ripping a small hole in the vinyl cover. So my dad built a lattice cover for the top of the gazebo. It looks fantastic and it only cost us $60 compared to the $1200 quote we got from a local handyman to add a roof. We had a bad storm the day after dad finished and not one branch hit the hot tub!

5. I’m really enjoying this summer. We go to the pool pretty much every single day. All my kids can swim without assistance and passed the neighborhood swim test so I don’t have to be in the water with them all the time. It’s opened up a whole new world for me. I can read. I can lounge. I can watch them play. It’s awesome. Big kids rock.

Week 1 of summer is in the books. Bring on week 2!

5 Things Friday {6.9.17}

Guess what? Our summer break started a day earlier than expected. We let the little kids skip the last day of school (with their teachers’ permission) and they were so excited to have no alarm clocks this morning! So was their mother, I won’t lie. We packed a lot into our last week of the school year though.

1. We spent a lot of time at the pool this week both Saturday and Sunday and then during the week in the evenings after school. These kids are water babies and they are never happier than when they are in the water. Our neighborhood HOA made the decision this year to not employ lifeguards from our pool management company. Truthfully, in the 12 summers we have lived here the lifeguards have been more of a pain than a help. So this year we are saving the money and putting it towards some upgrades to the pool area. So that means less time for me to sit and read when I’m the only parent supervising my kids but that’s ok. I put Matt in charge on the weekends and get my reading done.

2. I struggled to figure out what to do for the end of year teachers gifts for the little kids teachers. This is our last year at the elementary school where we have kids attending for the last 11 years. It’s bittersweet even though I’m excited for our little kids to attend school with our big kids. I wanted to do something really nice for our beloved teachers this year. Mason’s teacher is amazing, she is seriously just the best. He’s had her for 2 years and I think she’s the best teacher any of my kids have ever had. We’re going out for tacos and margaritas now that she’s no longer his teacher. And Zoey’s Kindergarten teacher has been absolutely a God send for us. So I decided to make them Favorite Things gift bags. At the beginning of the year the teachers fill out a Favorite Things survey so I used those to create personalized gift bags full of their most favorite things. I added a personal thank you card and I hope they know how much they are appreciated.

3. Tyler started physical therapy this week for the Chondromalacia in his left knee. The PT working with him is amazing. He works mainly with football players and he talked to Tyler just like his football coaches do so Tyler immediately liked him. Ha! Boys. Tyler has a lot of work ahead of him to rehab his knee but the PT feels like he’ll make a full recovery and be ready in time for camp at the end of the summer so we feel fortunate. Tyler’s laughing because the PT was telling him that he needs to strengthen his glutes in order to support his max squat of 425 and Tyler’s first thought was “my mom is going to tell all of Facebook that my butt is weak”. Yep. I sure did. Ha!

4. My annual first and last day collages of the kids. I can’t believe how much older they look now. First day is on the left and last day is on the right. They’ve grown so much and look so much older- especially Maia and Mason. He lost all of his little boy appearance, he looks totally grown up now. I hate it.

5. Zoey Jayne graduated from Kindergarten yesterday. We are 5 for 5 in Kindergarten graduations and this was our very last time experiencing the adorable little ceremony. It’s definitely bittersweet but I’d be lying if I didn’t admit that I love love love having big kids. They are fun and we get to do cool stuff now that they are older. Zoey’s ceremony was so cute. They sang songs and Zoey got really into it. Show choir might be in her future. Ha! We got to love on her teacher and tell her thank you. And I made sure to get lots of pictures of Zoey and her friends since she probably won’t see them much anymore. She’s in the middle of the back row at the top in these pictures. She’s a ham!

It was a busy week and I’m so glad that we are now on summer break! Woo HOO! Bring on the pool days and margaritas. I’m ready and I’ve earned it.

5 Things Friday {5.19.17}

We are winding down the school year, y’all. Tyler has 2 exams today and 1 on Monday and he is DONE with his sophomore year. Praise Jesus! The other kids still have a couple more weeks to go. But we’re almost there. It was a productive week in our house. I got a lot of projects finished and knocked a bunch of stuff off my to do list!

1. I finally finished the pantry. If you follow me on Instagram then you saw the saga with ANTS in the pantry. Gross. So I pulled every single thing out, scrubbed and sanitized it, and bought new air tight containers. It was a job. A long, ugly, job. But it is much more functional now.

2. On Mother’s Day, Matt power washed the back deck and the wooden furniture that my dad built so I could start staining the furniture. My dad built this amazing bar from scrap wood he had in his shop. It’s awesome and I cannot wait to put it to good use this summer. I have grand plans for this back deck to make it more functional and they are already under way. I can’t wait to share the transformation with you.

3. Our neighborhood pool opened on Sunday and the kids were so happy. That water was FRIGID! They jumped right in and had a great time. I sat on a patio chair and read a book. Everyone was happy. I can’t wait to spend long summer days at the pool with friends. It’s going to rock.

4. Matt and I had some errands to run earlier in the week and the girls didn’t want to come but Mason did. He tagged along and had a great time. It’s so nice being able to take kids one at a time and spend some time with them. We got ice cream and had so much fun with him. He has the best sense of humor.

5. Matt put together the first of several patio sets that I’ve ordered. We were supposed to go to Tyler’s end of the year athletic banquet but he had to study for 3 exams the next morning so he opted not to attend. He studied for hours and hours. It’s nice to see him actually taking school seriously for once. Ha! So Matt got to spend the evening putting together my new patio dining set. I love it. I found it on clearance on Target.com for a steal. It’s the perfect size for what I needed. The kids love it! They’ve eaten breakfast and dinner out there every day since we set it up.

5 Things Friday {5.12.17}

We are winding down on this school year, y’all. And we are literally limping across the finish line again this year. I am so ready for long lazy days at the pool with a margarita in hand. So ready. I will never understand why schools pack in 6 months worth of stuff into the last month of the school year. Why? Why do they do this to us? It’s been a busy week around here but we got a lot of stuff done!

1. I mostly finished my master bedroom redo. Finally. I got the new curtains hung that I picked up for a steal at IKEA in the as-is bins. I got the new bedding on and hung the pom pom garland I’ve had for months but just never got around to doing. I love how it all turned out. This is generally the most neglected room in the house so it’s been half finished for about a year now. I’m still working on the other side of the room so I’ll share that when I figure out exactly what I want to do.

2. I also finished up a couple of projects I’ve been working on for the last week or so. I, and by that I mean Matt, finished assembling my new TV stand and I decluttered and restyled the decor in the room. I love it! I also finished chalk painting the red cabinet in the upstairs hallway, hung the mirror that’s been sitting on the floor for about a year now, and added some decor. It turned out perfect.

3.  We also worked a lot on the front yard landscaping. Matt cut down all the old bushes in front of the window. I’ve hated those bushes for years and finally convinced Matt that they needed to go. It had to get done quickly because our pine straw was getting delivered the next day. And of course, as it always happens around here, the weather forecast included a 90% chance of rain the day after the pine straw was delivered. So we spent hours that evening spreading it in the beds we created. The kids helped a lot. And then it didn’t rain at all. Of course. Ha! This is my life.

4. In between errands and chores, Matt and I snuck away for an impromptu early dinner at Hwy 55. We had to go to Lowes to pick up some stuff and then planned to return our redbox movies in a little shopping center. The Hwy 55 was right next door. How could we resist? It was nice. We rarely get out on our own to eat anymore so I enjoyed it. The joys of having older kids who can babysit.

5. Maia is quite the artist in our house. She loves to draw and paint and she is passionate about photography. She recently had one of her paintings from school chosen to be displayed in the art show put on by her charter school. She was the only 6th grader who had a piece chosen to be displayed. And she doesn’t even like this piece, she thinks it’s not one of her best.

So that’s a pretty accurate recap of my week. And the weekend will be more decluttering, cleaning, and finishing projects. And grocery shopping- Walmart, Sam’s Club, and Aldi all in one day. Be jealous of my exciting life.

5 Things Friday {5.5.17}

I don’t know what it is about Spring that gives me the purging and decorating bug but it happens every single year. The last week has been full of projects and purging and I’m nowhere near done. Matt is so thrilled with me right now.

1. We started off last weekend with outdoor work. Matt power washed the front of the house, the porch, and the driveway. It looks so much better now. Then he laid the black edging in the yard for our new beds. Pine straw is being delivered on Monday and that will seriously help our curb appeal. Tyler had football practice early on Saturday morning but when he got home he vacuumed out all 3 cars and then washed them. Earning his keep, y’all. Earning his keep.

2. While they were working on the outside, I was working inside. A good friend of mine was getting rid of her nearly brand new king size bed because her fiance is moving into her house and he prefers to keep his bed. Seriously, she’s only had this bed for a few months! It’s a $2500 mattress! And she gave it to us for FREE! I’ve always wanted a king size bed but it was way down the list of stuff to buy. So I’m not going to pass up a free one in brand new condition. Matt rented a small UHaul and he took Tyler to pick it up.

3. And as it always happens, one project turns into a whole list of projects. We ended up switching the kids beds around again…for the second time in less than 2 months. We gave Zoey’s loft bed to our nephew, Jax. We moved Mason’s full size bed into Zoey’s room and Mason got our old queen size bed. Everyone was happy. Except Matt, who technically did 99% of the actual moving. But we got it done. And our whole house is in a state of disarray with stuff everywhere. I started purging in one room and it trickled into another room and so on and so on. Then at around 6:30pm on Sunday night I realized we have NO KING SIZE SHEETS for our new bed. None. So Matt and I made what was supposed to be a quick trip to IKEA for sheets. And we came home with a new TV cabinet, new pillows, new curtains, new sheets, new comforters….you know how that goes.

4. And lest you think I’ve given away my kids to concentrate on my house, I took Maia back to the eye doctor office to get her glasses tightened. They fit fine at first but then started slipping down her face while she was reading in class. She had the whole librarian glasses at the end of her nose thing going on.

5. As part of my purging and house re-doing, I moved the red cabinet from our foyer to our upstairs landing in the hallway. It looks much better up there but the red was just too….red. So I used the leftover chalk paint from Maia’s bedroom project and painted it yesterday. It literally took me less than an hour and it made such a difference.

It’s been a busy week. And the weekend will be even busier. We’re working in the yard again tomorrow and I have a gazillion projects to finish inside to. But it feels so good to get some things off my ever growing to do list!
