Fighting Cold Sores With Abreva Instead Of Old Wives’ Tales

Our new school schedule is killing me, y’all. I thought I was prepared. But that 5:30am alarm, the darker skies in the morning, and the agony of dragging 3 shell-shocked kids out of bed has been a rough re-entry into the school schedule. One evening recently I found myself feeling under the weather and I woke up the next morning with a cold sore starting on my upper lip. By the time our Friday night football game arrived I was sporting a big ole cold sore.

IMG_4555 (1)

Every single time I start to get sick with a cold or a virus, or I’m feeling especially stressed out I end up with at least one cold sore, sometimes multiple cold sores on my lips. It’s no fun! Nobody wants to walk around sporting cold sores. I’ve had this issue with cold sores since I was a child and over the years I have been given some… shall we say, questionable advice on how to get rid of them. I grew up in the mountains and the older generation has some very interesting old wives’ tales for just about anything that ails you. Some of the most memorable ones include:

1. Applying a cayenne pepper paste directly to the cold sore. Do not do this. You will burn a layer of skin off and you will cry. And the cold sore will still be there but it will be more noticeable because of the bright red layer of missing skin.

2. Using a cotton ball to soak the cold sore with antiseptic mouthwash. This is not a good idea. Do you know what happens when you soak your lips repeatedly with mouthwash? You get a lovely red ring around your lips. It looks like you’re wearing bright lip liner sans lipstick. And the cold sore will still be there.

3. Wearing a garlic necklace. This apparently has no effect on cold sores at all. And none of your friends or family will want to be anywhere near you. But you will be safe from all sparkly vampires so….

4. Drinking straight apple cider vinegar. The stubborn cold sore will still be there but you might end up with heartburn so potent that you could potentially burn it off with the fire coming from your esophagus.

5. Coat the cold sore with earwax. No. Just no.

  abreva2

I’m sure you’ve all heard the multitude of old wives’ tales and as much as we all want to believe they are true, it’s more effective (and safe) to fight your cold sore with medicine, not myths and use a reliable and more genuine solution like Abreva®. Only Abreva® is FDA approved to shorten the healing time of your cold sore. When used at the first sign, Abreva® can heal a cold sore in as few as 2 ½ days*. Abreva® is available without a prescription in the cough/cold aisle at all major Drug, Mass, and Grocery retailers.

Follow Abreva® on Twitter and YouTube for more information.

*Median Healing Time 4.1days.  25% of users healed in 2.5 days.

What are some of the funniest or strangest old wives’ tales you’ve heard? Tell me in the comments for a chance to win a $100 Visa gift card.

3 Tips For A Fun Family Game Night

Thank you Ellio’s Pizza for sponsoring this post. Visit your local retailer to pick up your own Ellio’s Pizza for a pizza night in!

One of the hardest things to adjust to as my kids have gotten older has been how busy our lives have become. When the kids were young we spent a lot of time together as a family. We planned special outings almost every weekend, we had impromptu picnics in the park, we made spontaneous trips to get ice cream after dinner. But as the kids have gotten older, their schedules have gotten busier. They play multiple sports and are involved in various activities and any free time they do have, they want to spend with their friends. Matt and I decided a few years ago to institute family night at least once a month. We choose one Saturday night every month and mark it off on the family calendar. Nobody is allowed to make alternate plans, but we do allow the kids to invite friends. We enjoy our kids’ friends and we like spending time with them. One of our favorite family activities is Game Night!

IMG_4456

I remember growing up how we did family game night at our house. My parents had a huge stack of board games and we took turns being the one who made the decisions for the night- from what games we played to what we had for dinner. My choice was always Monopoly and pepperoni pizza while my sister always chose Chutes and Ladders and cheese pizza. I was so determined that one day I would beat my dad at Monopoly. He was that parent who didn’t believe in letting kids win so it took me years to finally score a victory against him. I love that I’m able to incorporate these special traditions of game night and pizza from my childhood into my own family life. After so many years, we have family game night down to a fine art.

Tips For a Fun Family Game Night:

1. Be creative with the games. While I grew up with mainly Monopoly and Chutes and Ladders, these days there are so many more choices. We pick 2 games each time—an easier one for the little kids and a more complicated one for us after the little kids go to bed. The little kids love Pie Face and Memory. The big kids like Monopoly, Clue, Battleship, and Scrabble.

2. Have a grand prize. Last month we offered a candy basket to the winner of the little kids’ game choice, and a gift card for the winner of the older kids’ game. The kids are much more willing to spend the evening playing board games with their parents if there are prizes involved.

3. Serve delicious pizza. We lure the older kids in with the promise of yummy pizza. For our recent game night, we served Ellio’s Pizza, a super quick and delicious hot snack for family game night and also a great throwback, since it’s been around since 1963! These pizzas are made with 100% real cheese and absolutely zero artificial flavors, so not only do the kids love eating them, but I feel extra good about serving them.

There is nothing my family loves more than hot pizza and Ellio’s did not disappoint. Even my pickiest of eaters cleaned his plate and asked for seconds, which almost never happens! My kids dined on Ellio’s Pepperoni Pizza, and there are also five other delicious flavors out there including Cheese, Supreme, Five Cheese, Italian Sausage & Pepperoni, and Extra Cheese. Just like there’s a board game for everyone in your family, there’s also an Ellio’s Pizza flavor for everyone, too!

Getting Ready For Kindergarten With LeapFrog LeapStart

We are huge fans of LeapFrog products in our house. We’ve had pretty much all of them at one time or another. So when LeapFrog sent us one of their new LeapStart Interactive Learning Systems for Zoey I was excited! As you know, Zoey started Kindergarten this year so this was the perfect system for her. She’s working hard on her letters and sight words.

lp2

LeapStart Preschool & Pre-Kindergarten is an interactive learning system that gets kids 2-4 years old excited about everything from counting to problem solving with fun replayable activities that teach life and school skills. Zoey just turned 6 and she’s had hours of enjoyment out of this system! My nephew is 4 and he also has had so much fun with it!

lp3

Designed to help build key skills and challenge kids to get ready for their next step in learning. The magic behind LeapStart is a stylus that reads invisble dots on every page triggering engaging audio like questions, challenges, songs, jokes and more to teach school and life skills in new, exciting ways. Progress from Preschool to 1st Grade with 16 activity books, sold separately, that all work on LeapStart. Each activity book seamlessly blends school and life skills, like ABCs and music, for a more comprehensive introduction to key concepts.

lp4

A funfest of touch-and-talk games, creative challenges, problem-solving puzzles, math mazes and more awaits with 30+ activities in every book. Every activity across all 16 books is designed to be played again and again for endless discovery, storytelling, music making, jokes and more. Most replayable activities are designed with two levels so that kids can play and learn at the right level and move up when they’re ready. Perfect for Preschool and Pre-Kindergarten. Includes: Kid-tough device with easy-hold stylus for little hands and Preschool & Pre-Kindergarten sampler book.

Zoey had so much fun with this. She spent hours “reading” and learning. I definitely plan to purchase more of the books for her to continue using as she progresses through each level.

*I received the LeapStart and an assortment of books for free in exchange for an honest review as part of the LeapFrog Blogger Panel. All opinions are honest and are my own.

Preparing For Puberty With HelloFlo’s First Period Kit

Being the mom of daughters is a lot different than being the mom of sons now that they are older. When they were little it wasn’t that much different- the boys were always dirty and the girls were more dainty. But now that my daughter is almost 12 years old things have changed. Things have really changed. Suddenly Maia is worried about straightening her hair, and learning to apply mascara, and needing astringent, and oh, the sassy things that come out of her mouth.

IMG_5085

I remember that age very well. It’s a time that’s full of hormones, and body changes, and so much drama. Maia has not yet started her first period but I know it’s just around the corner so we’ve taken some steps to prepare for the big event.

Back when Matt and I were active foster parents we had several young teen and tween girls who lived with us for an extended period of time. They were, for the most part, very uncomfortable and shy discussing their periods with me as obviously I was not their mom. To help them avoid any embarrassing moments at school I created a little satchel of necessities for them to keep in their book bags or purses. I always included a new pair of underwear, a pack of flushable wipes, a pack of pads, and a candy bar. The candy bar always got a smile.

My mom, bless her heart, was not the greatest at open lines of communication regarding puberty. She’s British and let me tell you, that whole stiff upper lip thing is real. She didn’t like to talk in detail about stuff that she considered private and she referred to my period as “the event”. As though it was a party I needed to RSVP to. Oh mom. Back when I was around the age of expecting my first period we didn’t have the same kind of puberty talks in school that the kids nowadays have so I really had no idea what was coming. I had a general idea of what would happen but getting my first period at school was still shocking and embarrassing and I did not handle it well. I screamed and jumped up so quickly in the bathroom stall that I got caught in my own underwear. I fell over sideways and hit my head on the toilet paper dispenser. It was a whole catastrophe. It’s ok, you can laugh at me. So I’m determined to make sure Maia does not have the same first experience than I did. Head trauma should be avoided if at all possible.

IMG_4877

Fortunately, I am able to help Maia get prepared for puberty with HelloFlo’s First Period Kit. This exclusive, limited edition care package can be found in Target stores nationwide starting on 9/11 and includes period essentials, special goodies, and practical advice for navigating the new changes and experiences of womanhood.

img_5421

The HelloFlo First Period Kit includes informational guides for girls and parents written by a puberty expert, a full-sized box of U by Kotex® pads, fun and discrete zipper pouch, limited edition magnetic locker mirror (with a pocket for period essentials), facial cleanser, colorful bracelet, no-tug ribbon hair ties, tissues, and lip balm. The U by Kotex® Cleanwear Pads  feature 3D Capture Core* with Xpress Dri* cover for crazy fast absorption to help stop leaks so I don’t have to worry about Maia experiencing some of the embarrassing moments from my own teen years. I still won’t wear white jeans, too many mortifying memories. So I’m happy to be able to help my own daughter avoid any such happenings in her own teen years.  You can find out more about HelloFlo on FacebookTwitter, Pinterest, and Instagram. And more info about UbyKotex® is available by following them on TwitterFacebook, and Instagram.

How Children’s FLONASE® Allergy Relief Helps Us Enjoy Football Season

FLONASE® compensated me in connection with statements made in this post.

For the last year we have made a dedicated effort to making sure our family spends as much time outside as possible. The kids come straight home from school and play outside with friends. We take family walks in the evenings. We spend a lot of time on our back deck either in the hot tub or in front of the fire pit. Our goal has been to reduce screen time and increase family time outdoors. And our whole family feels the positive effects of our efforts. Fall is rapidly approaching and in our family that means football season. We are a football family and proud of it. Two of our boys play football and that means lots of hours spent on the practice field and lots of hours spent on the sidelines watching games.

As much as we love being a football family, all of our kids struggle with seasonal allergies that can make being outside for extended periods of time uncomfortable. It can take the fun right out of football season when they’re dealing with symptoms such as runny nose, sneezing, nasal congestion, and itchy, watery eyes. We’ve worked really hard to create a family environment that includes spending as much time outside as possible and I definitely do not want seasonal allergies to get in the way of that. We take the typical allergy sufferers precautions including changing clothes and showering when coming inside, using HEPA filters in our air conditioner and vacuum cleaner, and wearing sunglasses when we’re outside. But frequently those precautions are just not enough and I reach for the FLONASE® Children’s Allergy Relief for kids ages 4+ because I know it’s available OTC, can provide allergy relief for my kids. Children’s FLONASE® Allergy Relief is a non-habit forming anti-inflammatory that works in your nose to help block the allergic reaction that makes you uncomfortable. While most over the counter allergy pills only act on histamine, Children’s FLONASE® Allergy Relief helps act on 6 inflammatory substances, not just one. *

*Mechanism vs. most OTC allergy pills. FLONASE® acts on multiple inflammatory substances (histamine, prostaglandins, cytokines, tryptases, chemokines and leukotrienes). The exact number and precise mechanism are unknown.
It’s the first and only OTC nasal spray indicated to relieve both nasal congestion and itchy, watery eyes and it outperforms the #1 Non-Drowsy allergy medicine. ** Children’s FLONASE® Allergy Relief is available wherever OTC allergy medicines are sold.

**Total nasal symptom relief vs. 10 mg single ingredient loratadine. Join FLONASE® Greater Rewards to easily earn points whenever you purchase FLONASE®, watch videos and read articles, complete surveys, complete your member profile, and share content with friends. Be greater than your allergies, while earning Greater Rewards. Plus, if you join today you’ll immediately earn points and save up to $4 with a FLONASE® coupon.
