Weekly Book Club {1.24.18}

I’ve been busy adding books to a new collection on my Kindle app called the Unread Shelf 2018. I’m determined to read as many of these books as I can this year. Some of the ones I’ve added to the collection are books that I was so excited to see released but then I forgot all about them and they got lost in the depths of my Kindle. Both of these books came from the Unread Shelf 2018 collection!

Here and Now by Cheryl Etchison– Former Ranger Medic Lucky James feels right at home working long night shifts in the ER, but less so during the day, when his college classes are filled with flirtatious co-eds. When his 19-year-old chem lab partner shows up at his work with dinner for “her Lucky,” he quickly enlists the help of Rachel Dellinger, a nurse and fellow third shift “vampire”. Rachel is a people pleaser at heart, but she’s finally decided enough is enough when it comes to her on-again, off-again boyfriend. When Lucky begs Rachel to help him ward off the advances of his teenager pursuer, she blackmails him into helping move her things out of the apartment she shared with her ex into a place all her own. From there a friendship is born between two people just trying to make it through the night. Neither are living in the past or planning for the future. Until one day changes everything.

My Rating: 4 Stars

This is book 2 in the American Valor series. Book 1 was a 5 star read for me and I had very high expectations for this one to live up to. It didn’t quite hit me the way book 1 did but this was still a really good read. I adored Lucky but I had a hard time liking Rachel. She just came across as selfish for most of the book. I enjoyed the story and the build up to their romance though. I will definitely read book 3!

 The Tattered Gloves by J.L. Berg– Head down. Don’t look up.  Never make eye contact. Those were the words I lived by growing up, the words that protected me in an unsafe home. But words are only letters and eventually even they couldn’t keep his hands off me. Hoping to leave behind the shattered life of my past, I find myself in a boring, small town, with an aunt I’ve never met and at a school I loathe. But soon I learn, not everything in this world is as black and white as I’ve determined. Sometimes those we are so quick to judge often need a second, third or even fourth time to make a first impression. And often, there are friendships and even love waiting just around the corner, if we are brave enough to take the first step. Am I brave? Or will I hide behind these tattered gloves of mine forever?

My Rating: 4 Stars

This book hit me with all the feels. Poor Willow had an awful childhood with a neglectful mother who allowed her to be hurt. This book grabbed me from the very first page and wouldn’t let go. I had to finish it and see what happened. I felt a connection with Willow and I found myself rooting for her. I don’t read a lot of young adult or new adult books anymore but this one made me want to explore the genre again. Definitely recommend.
