One Little Word & Goals For 2017

flourish

I thought long and hard about what I wanted my word to be for 2017. Last year I chose Joy and it was perfect. I needed this year’s word to be just as perfect. I started thinking about what word would set the tone I desired for my year. And Flourish just came to me one morning. I want to flourish.

How perfect is that? To thrive. I want to thrive. In fact, thrive was my second choice word for 2017 so it worked out perfectly. I spent all of 2016 creating a joyful atmosphere to live my life. Now I’m going to Flourish in it.

1. Be involved. I want to be involved in the kids’ schools. I want to be involved in my neighborhood. I want to be involved with my friends. I want to be involved with the athletic boosters at Tyler’s school. I made a conscious decision to do this in the latter part of 2016 and I loved every minute. I made new friendships because of choosing to get involved. I’m going to continue to step out of my comfort zone in 2017 and say yes to being more involved.

2. Spend wisely. One of the best parts of the big kids going to uniform charter schools is how much money it’s saved me in the long run. I no longer buy a lot of clothes for them because they wear uniforms 5 days a week. I did really good at choosing to cook instead of grabbing take out in 2016 and I’m going to continue that in 2017. I plan to cut our grocery budget even more and be very intentional with where and how we spend money.

3. Read more. I love to read but life has been so busy that I didn’t get to read as much as I wanted. This year I want to read a lot more. And I want to read the books I already own that I spent months organizing into categories on my Kindle. I will turn off the mindless tv shows and pick up my kindle instead.

4. Update the bedrooms. Tyler needs a new bigger bed and I’m going to take that opportunity to do some redecorating in his room. Maia also needs a small room remodel. Mason and Zoey need less done but they could use some organization and a few new decor pieces to freshen things up. I also want to finish the master bedroom this year. I spent a lot of time on the decor downstairs in the main living areas so now it’s time to get the bedrooms done.

5. Keep the house clean. A big part of this is keeping the clutter out. It’s so much easier to keep the house clean when there’s not piles of stuff everywhere. I plan to do a big room by room purge every month. I already put donation bins in each bedroom and in the main hall closet so I can easily chuck items in there during the month. I also want to get back to having a cleaning schedule and I think that will help me.

6. Be more productive with my time. I’ve fallen into the routine of not having a daily routine. The kids are in school during the day and before I know it the clock strikes 3pm and I’ve not gotten anything done on my list. I need to focus more on my time and being productive and intentional.

7. Pay down debt. We have debt. Unfortunately we have quite a bit of debt and we’re desperately trying to pay it off. We need to pay it off. So I’m setting this as a goal for this year. I want to cut our expenses and pay down debt as much as we can. And that might mean making some unpopular choices in our house. It will be worth it.

8. Pay more attention to my outward appearance. I’m guilty of getting into the mom rut with yoga pants and sweatshirts or tank tops. Toss my hair into a ponytail or messy bun and go. I’m embarrassed to tell you how often I leave the house with no make up on. I’m nearly 40. Time to be an adult. I want to actually take the time to learn how to put on make up correctly this year. Maia is right about the age where she is wanting to experiment with make up. So I probably should learn how to do it. Ha! I need a skin care routine. I just need to be an adultier adult.

Here’s to a spectacular 2017!

My one little word this year is also flourish, for many of the same reasons, especially 2 & 8 🙂 On number 8, you might find it interesting that the makeup company Younique is also using flourish in 2017, #YFlourish2017. You can get some great skin care and makeup tips from them. Excited to read more of your blog and see future posts!
