I tend to be a very organized, optimistic, high energy, check stuff off my spreadsheet kind of a person. My husband refers to me as Type A. I’m pretty sure it’s the spreadsheets that led him to that conclusion. I don’t let much slow me down or put a damper on my spirits. Having 5 kids means I have to be on my game all the time just to keep up with them. Do you know what happens when a mom with 5 kids stops being on top of things? You find the 3 year old covered head to toe with black Sharpie, the 6 year old holding the offending Sharpie, the 9 year old creating some kind of a science experiment in the kitchen, and well, you see where I’m going with this. I like to keep everything in my household running smoothly which keeps all my kids happy and the end result is a happy mom.
Unfortunately I can’t be on my game all the time. There is one particular time of the month that shows up every four weeks like clockwork. You ladies know what I’m talking about. Your period, the dot, the crimson tide. Whatever you call it, every month it shows up with a vengeance, bringing with it painful cramps, pounding headaches, scary Sybil-inspired mood swings, and some seriously intense cravings for comfort foods.
The one thing I want most during that time of the month is to just be comfortable. On the days when I feel the worst I send my husband out of the house with all of the kids to give me a few hours to myself. As a busy mom with a very long To-Do list I find it really difficult to put my needs first but over the years I’ve realized that I’m a better mom when I do. So when those really bad period days happen I embrace my need for comfort to soothe the raging beast. I wear my softest pajamas, snuggle inside my fuzziest blanket with a hot cup of tea, and curl up on the couch to watch a marathon of my favorite television show, Everybody Loves Raymond, and then reading one of my favorite angst-ridden romance books on my Kindle. Laughing along with my favorite episodes and then sobbing along with my favorite book characters helps me relax and feel more like myself. I told you- Sybil inspired mood swings, y’all.
