Decor Doesn’t Have To Be New To Be Awesome

I am a huge fan of thrifting. I love thrift and consignment stores and usually find a bunch of fantastic deals. My mom is a huge fan of yard sales but I just can’t get behind those. I don’t wake up at 5am no matter how great the deals may be. Over the years I have found some of my favorite decor pieces by thrifting. Sometimes they need a little TLC and sometimes they are just perfect the way they are! Take a peek at my favorite thrifted finds:

I found this large crystal vase about 15 years ago at a thrift store for $5. It’s so heavy and I’ve used it in just about every room of the house over the past 15 years. It’s been dropped, knocked over, and hit with various toys- nary a chip or crack can be seen. That was a great buy!

I found this tray about 8 years ago at a thrift store for $1. It’s metal and the turquoise part was bright red. I used to use it at Thanksgiving and Christmas time. I recently covered up the red with a light turquoise paint and distressed it using a little gold craft paint. Now it matches my kitchen perfectly and I love it!

My mom found this curio cabinet at a consignment store for $15 a couple of years ago. It’s not in perfect condition but I have plans to stain it the same dark color that I just stained the kitchen cabinets. It has a light in both the top and bottom areas and it’s the size I needed for the dining room. A little TLC and it will look like new when I’m done.

My mom found this buffet at a consignment store about 7 years ago for $40. It is the matching piece to my dining room table (that my mom gave us when we moved into our house). It was an amazing find. My parents bought the dining room table when I was kid and they gifted it to us when we moved into this house because they were downsizing into a smaller house at the same time. I had given up finding any matching pieces for the dining table and one day, my mom just happened across this buffet. It’s the same manufacturer and everything. I love it! I found the black tray at a thrift store for a quarter about a month ago. It was a horrible olive green color so I sprayed it black and it matches perfectly in the dining room!

My mom also found the chandelier in my dining room at a thrift store for $10. It was brand new in the box! I hated the horrible gold chandelier that was in this room before- it looked like a spider. I’d been searching for one but hadn’t found anything I could afford. Mom came across this and knew it would look perfect. The brown is darker than it’s appearing right here- it’s a dark brown.

I found this bowl at a thrift store for $5 about 10 years ago. I love it. It was in storage for awhile because it’s huge and I had nowhere to put it. Recently I dug it out of it’s previous home in the closet and decided to use it as a fruit bowl. It’s the perfect size for the island and the massive amount of fruit I buy each week. I also bought the matching serving platter and double sided serving bowl at the same time for an additional $8. So I spent $13 and got an amazing 3-pc serving set!

I found this IKEA chair at a thrift store awhile ago for $5. It was all scratched up but it was perfect in Ty’s room at the time. When I recently redid the whole family room I brought it downstairs and spray painted it to match the desk. I bought a new cushion at IKEA and it fits perfectly in the space!

I found this mirror at a consignment store for $8 about 12 years ago. I was decorating Ty’s nursery at the time and it was just perfect. The original price sticker was still on the back and said $49.99. Since I purchased it the mirror has been in every one of our babies nurseries, Maia’s big girl room, and now it’s in the family room.

Decor definitely does not have to be new or expensive to make a statement or to finish off a room. When I go to a thrift store I look for unique items that are eye catching, or versatile pieces that will work in multiple rooms. Don’t be scared of items that might need a little TLC. I stay away from broken furniture but anything can be spray painted or stained to make it look new again!

I found the same Ikea chair at my local Salvation Army and picked it up!! So funny – except mine was $20 and yours was only $5, so you win. Plus, I never would have thought to paint it such fun colors!
