Keeping Kids Entertained On A Sick Day

I am so delighted to have been chosen to participate in a three part series for Children’s Mucinex. Being the mom of 5 kids I know a few things about coping during the cold and flu season. My first post in this series focused on the ways I try to keep my kids healthy during the sick season. Today’s post is all about what I like to call the Sick Day Busy Box.

Even though I hate when my kids feel miserable with the sick day blues I must admit that I do enjoy the extra one-on-one time I get to spend with them. Our lives are really busy these days so I try to make the most of every single moment I get to spend with my kids. When they are stuck at home on those sick days I want to make sure they stay engaged and busy so we enjoy our day together.

Many years ago I came up with the Sick Day Busy Box. It’s exactly what it sounds like- a box full of all kinds of fun and new activities to keep the kids entertained and busy on days when are home sick. The first one I made was a shoebox filled with a few little toys from fast food restaurants that had been collecting in my car. Over the years it has evolved and turned into something that the kids look forward to no matter how miserable they might feel.

As you can see, my current Sick Day Busy Box contains things that will appeal to all of my kids. I shop the sales and clearance sections all year long to keep my Sick Day Busy Box stocked with fun activities. I typically include things like a new movie, coloring books and crayons, arts and crafts activities, word searches, new books and puzzles. The box is for sick days only and it really does help my kids enjoy what could otherwise be a miserable and boring day.

To make sure that my kids feel as comfortable as they can during their sick day I reach for Children’s Mucinex. Children’s Mucinex Multi-Symptom Cold helps them get relief from their stuffy noses, chest congestion, and coughs. I like knowing they only need to take one medication to help alleviate their discomfort and relieve their symptoms. Children’s Mucinex Multi-Symptom Cold allows my kids to forget about being sick so they can enjoy all the fun stuff in the Sick Day Busy Box.

When my kids are sick, they just like the star treatment from Mom. They get all their favorite foods, favorite TV shows. If they are up to a game, we play that. It is a way for me to give them more one on one time in a house full. One of my memories as a child when I was sick was a special coloring book from Dad, and I would get my favorite bowl of tomato soup with lots of bread, a big glass of chocolate milk and would watch Andy Griffith with Mom.
