A Busy Mom’s Guide to Getting Ready in 10 Minutes or Less

I don’t know about y’all but I rarely have time to indulge in a lengthy routine to get myself ready to leave the house. Five kids kind of prohibits that. I’m happy if I get a shower that includes shaving both legs! Moms of more than 2 kids will totally feel me on that one, I’m sure. From shower to out the door, I can be ready in 10 minutes or less on a normal day. Now if I’m going somewhere special then obviously it’s going to take more time to get all gussied up and beautified- Matt calls it plaster and spackling. Funny man.

I am not a product hoarder. Once I find products that I like, I buy them religiously until my skin decides to rebel or they stop making product. I use St.Ives Invigorating Apricot Face Scrub every single day. My favorite daily moisturizer is Neutrogena Visibly Even Daily Moisturizer with SPF 30. After I moisturize, I always use Revlon PhotoReady Perfecting Primer

I don’t wash my hair every day. I know, the horror. I wash it every other day and sometimes every third day.   I do shower every day, don’t get your panties in a twist. I just don’t wash my hair every day. I use Rockaholic Dry Shampoo and go for the textured look. On days that I do wash my hair but don’t have time to style it, I use Herbal Essence Tousle Me Softly Spray Gel. I spray that on while my hair is still wet (avoiding the roots) and then scrunch my hair until it’s dry. I end up with beachy waves with a minimum of effort.

I’m not big on makeup. I don’t wear much of it and I don’t wear it everyday. I have a few go-to’s that are always in my makeup bag. I swear by Revlon PhotoReady Airbrush Mousse Makeup. I’ve tried all the expensive brands and I come right back to this one! I use the same Revlon PhotoReady brand of Bronzer, Cream Blush, and Eye Primer + Brightener. For concealer I love Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Eraser Dark Circles Treatment/Concealer. I rarely wear eye shadow or mascara. For some reason I am allergic to something in most mascaras and my eyes swell shut. It’s not a good look so I tend to skip the mascara. For my lips I swipe on some L’Oreal Infallible 8hr Plumping Gloss in the Plumping Tawny shade. That’s it, the full extent of my makeup routine. 3 minutes or less, every time!

There you go. 2 minutes on Step 1, 5 minutes on Step 2, and 3 minutes on Step 3! 10 minutes or less and I’m out the door. It’s a good thing I’m so speedy too because Matt takes his time getting ready. I’ll have myself ready plus all the kids ready, the diaper bag packed, snacks and drinks packed, and he’ll still be staring at himself in the mirror. The life of a mama, huh?!

What are some of your favorite products? How long does it take you to get ready to leave the house?

  • I skip the coffee, so both of my legs get shaved.

  • I’m semi-ashamed to share this, but here’s my beauty plan for the busy mom: Red Light Makeover – http://goo.gl/SQkLZ .

Love your product recommendations. Will have to check some of them out next time I’m on the road. 😉

  • I’m feeling pretty frumpy…. I hardly ever wear makeup, I hate lotion and never put any product on my face, I never do anything with my hair and I live in t-shirts and Ts when not at work. I dont wash my hair everday either, it is bad for your hair to do this. Luckily though, I have curly hair and can just scrunch it after a shower and be good to go. I never blow dry as that is bad for your hair too! Now here could be an interesting post – how to get your KIDS ready and out the door in 10 minutes? Thats where I struggle!

    • My hair stylist said it’s better for your hair to not wash it every say. I never ever blow dry my hair. I don’t have the time for that. Ha! I have a post coming soon on how to get your kids ready to go in 10 minutes 🙂

  • I can’t even wake up in 10 minutes – unless it’s 9:00 am or later. Once I’m awake my makeup is quick, sometimes just eyeliner, mascara and Revlon Colorstay – the only lip color that will stay on my lips for a few hours. Summer is good, I just use mineral powder – no base because my face isn’t ghostly white. My hair – I never know how long it’s going to take, sometimes I can brush and go – sometimes it’s sticking straight up and I have to get it wet and blow it dry.

    • Oh notice I didn’t say from bed to ready in 10 minutes. I have to wander around aimlessly and ingest at least 2 cups of coffee first.

  • I can get ready in a jiffy. I always have to wait for Doc H. I’m not quite sure what he must do to get ready, but whatever it is, it takes FOREVER!!
I think I’m going to try the dry shampoo. I HAVE to shampoo every single day. If I don’t, the flies won’t even come near me. I hate it!

    • I hear you! Matt takes forever to get ready. It’s insane. And he’s bald so it’s not like he needs to do his hair. I love the dry shampoo. I have really fine and oily hair. The Rockaholic dry shampoo is the only one that works for me!

  • LOL at the last part about Matt taking his time! The hubs does the same thing..which I KNOW is intentional…or the part where he can wake up in the morning and eat breakfast because he’s hungry…wouldn’t it be nice to eat when you want to!!:) Thanks for sharing!

    • What is up with men? I get myself ready, all the kids ready, back the diaper bag, add snacks & juices, and have everything loaded in the car before he’s ready to do. Drives me insane!
